Just got back from a three day trip to SWR. Had a blast left home 630pm sunday and got up to SWR just after midnight.

DAY 1
Got up at the crack of 7am:rolling laughter: and dropped the B/crusher in at Back Creek and headed for the FAD. With the custom outriggers set up we trolled the FAD for dollies with no luck. Nothing on the sounder we headed for the another spot 30mile offshore. ( There was no swell so my 5.25m center console did with ease. Still trolling on the way we can across some birds chasing baitfish.(no surface action but sus none the less) straight away BOOM double hook up Small YFTs 6kg (My first YFT)
We did about 6 trolls before the school dived not to be seen again that day. But we got 4 YFTs in the boat all about 6kg. Threw back 4 stripies.
Stilll trolling for the main goal of a Marlin, nothing so we headed for Fish Rock. Along the way we must have snuck up on a marlin sun-baking suddenly about 20 foot off the boat a big Est 80kg marlin was about 4 foot in the air. But didnt want a bar of the lures out.Bugger. Fish rock was a blast if you like rat kings. In the wash you could see big schools of 50 odd. They eat any lure, SP, popper, I reckon half a house brick if you threw one, could not get a legal one so went home for the day.

Day 2

Off through back creek and to the FAD again only to get small rat kings. Then off to warmer water to find the Marlin we wanted. No luck all day. We got onto our first school of YFT and again pulled some jelly beans. The got onto a bigger school. Suddenly zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz three rods are off. two lines cross (ping) busted. One for the boys is still on and finally making ground and it spat the hook.(gutted 0 from 3 fish) back on the school and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz im on, set the hook and i turned and said its a small one only to look back to see 200m striped off the reel in 8 seconds. After making some of the line back the fish was lost due to what looked like a bad knot.( PISSED OFF with a certain person who works in a fishing store) so were 0 from 4 big YFT. Trolled back and had more fun on kingfish as a last resort. Still no marlin.

Day 3

Weather was bad and offshore looked worse, so fished the river for flatties.

All and all a good 3 days. Got my first YFT and a glimmer of hope for that Marlin. Will be back there late DEC. Really tired so pics will be up tomorro

Sounds great Crusher, but can't blame anyone else for a dodgy knot, always tie your own.
& for those who think they can't, learn, geoff wilsons knot book or various web sites can teach you any knot you want to learn.

I tie my own when fishing normally, we ran 5 rods in our spread. Four of the five were crimped lines, one was tied, its hard to tell someone who works in a tackle store give me your rod i will tie your knot. You know. He wont let it down, rumors have it today head office have sent a book of knots and a tin of tuna to him.

BC,

ya trip sounds good mate. yft sound fun. beak next time.

curious how that back creek went? i saw it and the channel was narrow and really shallow when i was there a week before you. was it gnarly? i was thinking of using the bigger river when i go up but do you think i should just use back creek?

Also, can you just go out through back creek @ all tides?

Back creek is good,I have not used Main bar as i dont really need to. back creek looks like you cant get a boat out. We try to head out on a good mid tide. However on the first day we came back at 530pm and it was close to dead low. My friend wanted to wait but i didnt. so we gutts it (no swell in that corner) and it was probably 2 foot deep maybe less in some spots but we made it. IF not follow the charter boats out through the BAR but be careful as it can get dodgy out there. The dive boats sometimes use back creek also. But on good tides. Just really depends on what boat you have

rather than start a new thread i thought id chuck it here.

going to SWR in first week of feb.

should i be running all stuff for the big guys on wire or just risk it.

or should i run all on mono and then only deep divers on single strand.

i think i'll run marlin lures, livies and cubes on mono and deep divers on single strand.

be spewing to loose $45 lures and also loose the macks/wahoo.

i wanna rig everything now.

Cheers

also, most of the time low tide is at dawn/early morning (i.e 6-8)

should i just run the river bar @ dawn right on the low with no water moving at all. and then come in on the high.

do the lows in the morning rule out back creek?

Cheers,

WHAT BOAT ARE YOU RUNNING, MY 5.25M CENTER CONSOLE CAN DO BACK CREEK AT NEARLY ANY TIDE DEAD LOW, MID OR HIGH.

WE DIDNT RUN WIRE JUST HEAVY LEADER CRIMPED, BUT THEN AGAIN WE DIDNT GET A MARLIN STRIKE,

running a 4.5 m glass boat with 60 4 banger.

Thats encouraging cuz i heard 3 boats got worked in two weeks. and 1 was a 24ft bertie. there is no way im hitting that bar up anymore. im scared ****less of it and i havent even seen.

i'll be going the creek.

tandoors a beak beacon.

that sounds good,

back creek is the go, you will be lucky to encounter any swell what so ever. if you go main bar follow a dive boat out. 4 dive boats go out at around 8am. so you can get the jist of it.

good luck
