ok yet another question guys i hope i'm not spending to much time on this messageboard! but its so damn helpful for my fishing!! raised by my mum i seem to be lacking the fishing knowledge that should have been passed down to me! hents this messageboard has been quite the father figure to me!! haha
ok down to business
i need a new setup!
i am looking to buy a fishing rod and reel setup for a small 10ft
tinny setup in sydney harbour & pittwater sort of area!
i currently have a 7ft silstar rod & a shimano symetre 4000FI reel with braided line i think 20 pound from memory!
i am extremely happy with that setup but would like another setup to
have on board when going for the bigger boys!!! like the kingies and dueys!
what would you recommened ? im quote into the spin reels but ive never tried a overhead??
thanks again guys for all your help!
pete
Mate, it all depends on what you want to budget for it. If your after Kingies, the Symetre you have can cope with the normal run of fish. But if you want to target the bigger ones, then you will need something better.
If you would like to give overheads a go, then look at a Shimano TLD 15. Mate that to a Shimano Backbone rod, with 30 lb braid, and you would be set. This should set you back around $300 complete. You won't be able to cast with it though.
If you want to cast, and do it without too many dramas, then stick to spin reels. And if you would like to keep costs down, have a look at the Flueger Contender range of reels. Mate that with a solid Ugly Stik and 30 lb braid and your set. Should cost around $200 odd.
an 8 - 10kg outfit should cope with just about anything you can catch in the harbour, when it comes to big kings or jew if they stitch you up on 20lb, they'll do it on 50lb as well (poles, posts, anchor ropes & boats) :coool: so you would be no better off in inclosed waters. outside around reefs, where you have a bit of time to try & keep em off the bottom, different story, you can bump up your tackle & forget (gently, gently aproach) & do your best to try & pull e'm up, hahaha love it.

My picks for the 'next level' of tackle would be a abu 7000 matched with a 6ft6 or 7 ft uglly stick 6-10kg oh stick the platinum is the one but a gold will do. Match it up with 30-50lb braid and you will have 15-30 years of trouble free fishing. I know of several blokes that have had the abu 25 years or more with no trouble. They are one of the easiest overheads to cast and trouble free, the good news is that the new models are once again made in sweden!!!!
For a spinning outfit, a baitrunner 4500 or 6500 on a 6-15 kg outfit with 30 to 50lb braid will do all you need for Sydney.
Both of these outfits should only cost 250 to 300 dollars shop around and you will come out on top, its a buyers market, especially in the winter time. Good luck
Sdfish, the Guy said he didd'nt wana overhead ******* you can't buy a shimano bait runner with a rod for 300 ya goose. where you shoppin.

You are the daft one. He stated that he hadnt used an overhead reel before not that he didnt want one.
By the way you boofhead, where do you get off telling one of the best tackle shops in Sydney what can be bought for his money.
If you cant buy a set up like suggested, then Id say that you are rude to those where you deal with as you have been on this site.
Hope you wise up soon and enjoy this site as the rest of us do.

You can get that deal on baitrunner with a backbone several times a year when shimano puts on the sales...keep an eye out, shop around. When we have the deal at our shop they usually sell out pretty quick.

The red 7000 is the one to get, that is the original one, the model has not changed for 20 odd years (not much anyway).
Its easy to cast with a bit of practice.
The TLD 15 is a good reel too but it does not have a level wind, thats why we suggest the abu 7000. On the down side it has a star drag, where the tld has a lever drag. Both are great reels. Abu also has a 7000ld thats a 7000 with a lever drag, its a little bit more expensive, but great to use and it has a level wind. However it does not have the cast control knob that the 7000 has. The plain 7000 would be a beter choice if you want to learn how to cast an overhead.
Other points to consider are that the red 7000 is bushed instead of having bearings. The 7000ld has 4 bearings from memory.
There are plenty more models of the 7000 out that are variants of the original. Stick with what the others are based on and you cant go wrong. It we not break the bank as some of the variants will
I have had mine for 10 years now with no problems.

Penn 320 gti in the star of more exp LeverDrag are another no nonsense reel. Made in the usa, ive been tring to blow mine up for years. Its pulled more fish than i ever hoped for. Just dropped a new bearing in and a few drops of oil in and its 6yrs old, gets fished almost weekly!

I don't know if you absolutely have to go with an overhead reel or stick with a threadline, but maybe have a look at this reel, a Shimano Ultegra 5000. I would think for the price advertised (approx. $125 AUD landed) would give you good quality and this would handle kings whithout too many issues. The reel can give up to 10kg of drag which will stop most of the stubburn harbour kings. I have no association with Shimano or eBay either by the way.

Is this your only reel you own jaja?
Did you like it and what model is it?
Cheers

NO ive got more, it was ok but it dont wurk anymore
gtr ax 100
the shimano charter special would be a bit easier to use than a tld 15, as the charter special has a level wind and is a easier reel to cast than a tld.
a nice silstar power tip rod around 8-10 kilo and a charter special with 20-30lb braid would be a nice versatile set up, the abu 7000 are a nice reel as well
for your first overhead id recomend one with a level wind and a casting control.

No offence but that old Shimano that is broken doesn't look well looked after. And is not even comparable to the Ultegra or any of the new Shimano's.
