As Dog catcher said, what reel. If a small baitcaster then backing if using braid is optional. For larger overheads I'v not used backing myself, others may have their own opinions and personal preferences on this.
if the reel in question has a tie off point on the spool to secure line, it should be fine right through.
If it "does not" then yes definately put some mono even if only 10 or so wraps, this stops the braid from just spinning over the drum of the reel as braid is really slippery.
If your thinking of saving money that will depend on the reel & the specific application you have chosen to do with it,
bottom bashing (deep) or chasing fish that strip some line, go as much braid as possible.
if say just chasing estuary & inland fish maybe just top shot it with 100-150m of braid over mono backing.
hope that answers ya ?'s

i have similar queires as i just bought an overhead and was also wandering do i need to put backing...the reel can fit about 500m of 50lb braid...and i also would like to know how to spool line on it evenly coz i have seen some overheads with unevenly spooled line or is this just the way it is? the reel is an accurate 870c and plan to use it for jigging / bottom bashing / chasing fish that strips line etc

If you can afford it & want to spool the whole thing up with Braid not a prob cant recall the name of the knot I use but even if your knot is sliping just crank the handle a few times with no pressure on the line & it will start to lock onto the spool no prob.
If the initial Q was how best to evenly spool line onto the spool.
I know peeps have probs doing this.
You can buy a non expensive spooler upara
I have a couple in 2 various sizes & can apply pressure to the spool via tentioning a spring which sits against the spool & locking nut.
A great wittle gadget line goes on with even pressure + you're avoiding any line twist.

Buggered if I know what they're called !
Line Spooler I guess ??????
Not sure if all tackle shops will have them but I do know complete angler bought in a sh*tload of them not that long ago.
Best bet is one of the larger tackle shops or chains they're the ones most likely to carry them in stock.
I did manage to find a couple of pics to show you so you'll @ least know what they are.
There's 2 models & both have suction caps so you han suction then to virtually anything the heavy duty model has 2 suckers on it & is more suited to the larger spools of line.
You'll see the spring setup I was talking about earlier just plong the spool onto gizmo move dooberlacky in/out till you get required tension on spool then just finger tighten the screw & Bob's your uncle wind away
Yep good things, got mine from BassPro Shops in U.S. it's a simple one like DC's about $12 U.S.
These are pretty nifty also they even have a stripping motor as well. about $30 U.S.

Yeah they are simple
Not sure what they retail for good guess is around $15 mark for the wittle wun.
You should see my setup for spooling up my Game Reels it's a wee bit more compex esp when I'm spooling off 10,000 meter spools
Buggered if I'm going to wind that line on by hand :rolling laughter:
