The Australian Communications and Media Authority has proposed to ban anchoring in a huge swath of the ocean off Long Reef and Clovelly. This is to protect submarine cables. These cables have been there for decades without been affected as far as I know. The only exception is to permit anchoring within 500 metres of shore (this will make all reef fishing okay off Clovelly) but will affect fishing on the wrecks at Long Reef as well as the reef located out past the end of Long Reef.An exception is to be made for the wreck of the Dee Why, permitting anchoring within 200 metres. The Peak is also exempt. Therefore, fishers will not be able to anchor when fishing huge areas of the coastline. What can be done? Go to the web site www.acma.gov.au or email ACMA with your (hopefully colourful and loud) views.
