Maybe Im a long way behind here and im only new to this forum so it may be old news but has anyone had the dept of primary industries come around on a boat and give you packs on catch and release and a "dioxin" problem in sydney harbour. Had some hook and pliers. measuring device etc inside.
Just curious also why if sydney harbour has a pollution problem why isnt that addressed immediately?

thats unnacceptable for the fish to not be safe from the harbour...

Wow where have you been hiding?
The dioxin problem has been well know and widely publicised in the last 2 years or so.

This is the reason the commercial fisherman have been shut out of the harbour.
which in turn is probably the reason the fishing has improved so much.

The DPI has guide lines about how much fish is safe to eat and what species have elevated levels. The safe monthly limit is pretty low too.

As far as i know they are working to clean it up but this is a major problem as the dioxin is in contaminated sediment up at homebush.
This sediment has been washing into the main harbour for years. As well as fish and prawns moving up and down the harbour eating each other, transferring and spreading the contamination.

Also cleaning it up is very complicated as dredging the contaminated sediment (when you know where it is) can actually make it worse as the sediment is stirred up by the dredge.
It would also be impossible to catch ever contaminated prawn and fish in the harbour to remove them from the food chain.

I suggest you read the information about how much is safe to eat and be very very careful about where you catch fish that you intend to eat.

Thats all we can really do at the moment.

Well i havent actually fished mate since i was about 14 and at 32 i have started again 2 months ago so thats where ive been and havent seen anything on the news about it. Ive also been OS for a year in that time too. I was told they stopped commercial boats fishing the harbour due to fish levels not toxins. whatever happens, how did the state gov. allow the pollution to happen. something that is so important to sydney, that being the harbour, should have everything done to preserve it.

Also is fishing out near the head or up near manly Ok, is it just inside the harbour that they are worried about?

is the hawkesbury ok as well. i read someone say it wasnt.?
