Hi there,
I am relatively new to sydney and with summer rolling around, I would like to find somewhere to fish in the mornings. I live in Kingsford, but dont have any transport. I'm happy enough to walk as far as Coogee or somewhere like that.
Any ideas of somewhere worth fishing from?
Btw, I don't have a lot of experience, (I have only ever fished in fresh water before)
Thanks

Do you want to beach/rock fish or just fish inside the harbour...
What sort of gear have you got??
If you got a 12 foot rod set up, there are plenty of old timers who fish the ledges from The Gap to Bondi and further down toward Coogee, especially for Kings etc in the summer but also for pigs and luderick over the winter months.
The harbour is probably the best spot to start. Some land based bream and flathead spots are accessible by public transport, around the southern foreshore west of the harbour bridge, to Balmain and further..
Otherwise you can try to find an uncrowded beach down that way (prob at night!!) for a bit of gutter fishing.:wiink:

Hi guys. I have just signed up. I am very similar to the OP. Though I do have transport. Spent a couple of hours around Coogee and Bronte looking for a spot to fish. Met one guy who said try Gordons bay. Had a look and looks good. But i have no idae about fishing. But i'm keen to learn. Hence why i came accross this forum/website. I live in Randwick and not far from the beaches. I want to be able to go and cast off around the beaches. But today was a stonker for the sun. So no way i could get close to the beach to cast into the sea. I have a decent rod that can be used from the beach but not too big that it cant be used in the boat. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

there are some sweet areas to fish inside the harbour around neilsen bay, camp cove, watsons bay and rose bay on the south side. try getting some fresh pillies or the like out off any of these headlands to start with. Should be a few tailor, flatties and such about...
might even find some marauding kings! - tho prob squid the best for em
still fishin well round town too
hooked a few big tailor on live yakkas from the deep parts under the bridge on monday, and reports are that there are some decent jewies taking the same off blues pt at pres.....

But what about around the eastern suburbs.ie Bronte, Coogee, Bondi etc? Any info on some sites around there? Also is there any books that you would recommend about fishing? I really am a begginer. I have been fishing before but not for a few years and i was fishing with people who knew what they were doing. Any info appreciated , thanks.:beerchug:
Clovelly baths fishes well, Groper in close on crab legs, Salmon, Tailor Sharks at night etc. Kings come thru occasionally, there is a bommie on the southern side you can cast out to. Would fish well after a big sea. Float baits out. Allt he best.

scott,
Whaddya want to catch??
beach or rocks??
following is a range of options anyway........
big fish fishn - using livies etc - could mean waiting round for a while between bites, but will get you onto jewies kingies bigger tailor and salmon, esp off tha rocks,
whereas pillies or squid fishin can get you a bit more action esp from tailor and salmon,
and even smaller bait fishing with lighter line for bream flatties whiting etc will get more bites n action - 'n it can sometimes be better off tha beach too
For the bigger stuff, a rod that can handle about 20 - 30lb line (say an 8 or 9 wrap sndyer or alvey or other 12 foot medium taper rod - eg wilson mt9144 - or a thicker fiberglass 8 - 12/15kg rod [best for the beginners] - or for the rocks even a 10 foot fast taper if you want to fish for drummer - eg fsu4120 or 5120 from wilson) and a reel to match. I like the shimano baitrunners in 4500 and 6500 but the penn spinfisher 850 or 950's are also good.
For lighter stuff a 4-8kg rod (or 6wrap 12 footer - mt6144) with a shimano [or other brand] 4000-6000 size reel in your price bracket.
then read up on floats with livies or with ganged hook rigs, or paternoster rigs off the beach (for starters).
Geoff wilsons book of baits and rigs can be useful, as well as any book on rock and beach fishing (there are a few - think gary brown has one out) and a book on fishing sydney and south
this might be a bit much onfo to start on but the blokes at your local tackle shop will be able to decipher it all for you,
hope this is of some help!
Let us know how you go
Cheers
Stef
Just one quick thing to add:
DON'T FISH OFF THE ROCKS UNLESS EXPERIENCED!
Team up with a mate / join a club and go with some who can show you the ropes.
We lose too many fishos every year needlessly.
Good Luck in your new fishing career!

Any clubs you would recommend? Bare in mind it has to be the Eastern suburbs. Numbers etc would be good.
