Hey SFF peoples..Just a quick report on the 2009 port Stephans Trailer Boat Tournament,we headed up on thursday lunch to fish the tournament with high hopes, there was reports of big swells and strong winds so we waited to hear the the final weather report on thursday night and it turned out to be 3meter swell and 20knots NE,so we made the decsion to head out in the morning at 4.30am to see it for our own eyes..Ok,drank some beers and hit the sack to wake up on Friday morning with 1088 other fisherman with 550 odd boats spread out threw about 4 or so boat ramps..Hectic,as i been fishing this comp for years now and this year was probably the most competitors ive ever seen..Launched the boat at 4.30am with a few other early birds with us,headed out to the heads and couldn belive our eyes, swell was a little lumpy but no wind so we made the bolt out the heads and headed up north in the dark to fish 55km up past seal rocks to search for longtails on the headlands with live baits..Once we got out of the heads which was the lumpy part of the trip the water came to prob 1meter swell with extremely slow rollers and it was glassed out water..Unreal as the forecast was wrong...Cant remeber the time but roughly 6.45am we got the our spot to start grabbing some live baits on the spot were we fish for longtails, burleyed up and slimeys came up straight away, got one instantly and threw him out on 8kg line under a float in hope of longtails as we filled up the livey tank,we had 2 other liveys thrown out as well and with in an hour we got a triple hook up,we took our time and were hoping for longtails but finally got one to the boat and it was a mack tuna about 6kg which we kept for the point score, the other 2 camp in and were also mack tuna so we kept them for the point score also..It was a pain as all day we couldnt land a longtail with the odd few that got sharked and just getting longtails heads back..Threw the day we got around 15 mack tuna and with single hook ups, double hook ups and a few triple hook ups thrown in as well..It cam to sunset and it was this time last year we had glory with hooking Longtails just befor dark when we had another triple hook up and we looked at each other as they were screaming off with line ans aid could this be longtails??So bang set the hooks and took our time but fianlly got them to the boat and mack tuna again, but it uped our points a little as they were a little bigger...
Saturday we headed out agian in search for tuna and snapper for a mixed bag but we couldn get any snapper on plastics at all,we fished all wash zones that we were allowed to fish away from the marine parks,no tuna also which made us worry a bit..A mate of mine was trolling little bonitos behind his boat about 100m away from us for kings and he managed to land a 19.7kg king which was a good effort in 6ft of water with 24kg line and 60lb fluro carbon leader,3 hours later he had a burley trail going and threw in a hole dead slimey and managed a 8.6kg snapper, which gave him some point along with his king..
Saturday was tough with no fish for us except some small kings to 7kg on plastic and live slimeys..Bad weather came threw with a bit of a southerly and heavy rain so we headed back slowy in the swell as most boats were heading back also and a good few were tucking in behind Broughton island to stay the night
When we got back to the marina on sat night the point score revealed us in the tuna category 1st 2nd and 3rd which which were from the tuna on friday and ment no one had caught tuna at all on sat aswell,10pm came when fishing had finshed for all fishos, and by 10pm we were still in the 1st 2nd and 3rd placings :warp:
We made the decision to not fish on sunday as the water turned to brown soup after the heavy down pour we had, some went out but to get nothing due to the conditions..
Sunday lunchtime came along with fishing all finished by the guys that went out in the crap conditions with nothing to weigh in..1pm and presentations had started..Come along to the tuna category and they called out White Lighting which was the name of our boat for us to collect the prizes which were hanging out our ears with fishing tackle and heaps of vouchers and holidays..Raffles were getting drawn as well and we both got our name called out,out of 1088 people you had to be lucky..I won 1weeks Holiday at a popular holiday hotel in port stephans and $300 bucks worth of boat insurnace from club marine and a slab of coke,my mate james got called out as well and got the same thing..
Time came along when the the top 3 placing were called out for and the lead up to champion boat..Woooohooooo WHIT LIGHTING was called out again,we managed to get 2nd place in the Champion boat of the hole tournament with even more prizes and gear..:smiile:We were chuffed..:congrats:
We had a very drunken night i must tell ya that haha :alcho::alcho::congrats:
What a great weekend we had with some good fish caught not just by us but but alot of the anglers out there, especially the big kings and cobes..
Well done to everyone that competed and see you all next year if there was anyone from this site up there..
Ill upload some pics asap when i get my camera sorted..]
Cheers,Nath
