View Full Version : Looking for new fishing spots....
A mate and I are a bit sick of just fishing around the harbour and are looking for some new spots. we are land based at the moment and where hopeful to get a few good tips from the other members on here about some good places. We had considered going up to bobbin head or somewhere like that. If anyone has any info on what might be a good spot and exactly where that would be much appreciated
cheers
What places are you guys fishing in the harbour and at night or day?
The Harbour is a top spot to fish, there is alot of structure around there and plenty of fish.
I keep telling people to look at their street directories, look for narrow stretches of water with any fishable places, like parks or roads.
Have you guys tried Blues Point, Clarkes Point, Darling st wharf Balmain, Hmmm other places i can suggest is the Rail Bridge at the Hawkesbury( current is strong so change of tides is good) and also Kangaroo Point Wharf in Brooklyn. Try these.
Fish all types of tackle, light for Bream and Whiting and Flatones, heavier gear with live bait or big fillets for Jews and sharks or Tailor.
well we usually fish clarkes pt, greenwhich, balmain near birchgrove oval, havent tried near the iron cove yet though, tried blues pt but had my line taken twice by guys in small boats coming too close...... went down to bradleys head the other day but kept getting caught in the weed about 5 to 10 meters out. would do clifton gardens but it always seems too crowded. We arent the type to push in near people, like the wank@' i had the other day fished right between my two rods at clarkes pt. we arent sick of the harbour but new fishos who are keen to try new places. thats why. i would love to catch a flathead with soft plastic and whiting or other species with poppers. the only time ive caught a flatty was by accident twice. xtosea what is the fish your wife has in her pic with the brown and yellow stripes. i caught one of those but threw it back coz i didnt know what it was. is it a leather jacket species?
thanks for your info too, you always have good posts mate.....
Ok, you fish great spots with plenty of fish, my favorite bait in the harbour is Yakka Fillet by far, catches everything, then Squid strips, dont need more than 30lb trace for big fish, size 4/0 hook is anple for the harbour.
Places like Iron Cove fish well the days around the change of moons as this is the time the tides are high enough to fish the area in the mornings, 6lb main line with 6lb trace is more than ample, Gulp 3" Minnows are a treat as well as worms, fish like this everywhere, i do with my GF, in the day i flick 3" minnows in all colours everywhere and thats how we get most fish, even my misses lost an estimated 20kg the other week as it spooled her but they will go for it. Kings just love them, you always will hook one on that.
For Bream i like pilchard fillets, best bait for them, Flathead like them too. But Flathead go nuts over soft plastics, they simply cant help themselves, they would be the most common fish caught on them.
A good place i can suggest for Jews if you have bait is Pulpit Point on the high and run out, especially around the full moon or week leading up to it.
Other places you can try are off the beaches, like Narrabeen, always get sharks there or Jews and Salmon plus Tailor.
I'll have a look at the fish ny GF is holding, i dont know which one it is. will let you know soon
The fish my misses is holding is a LEather JAcket the harbour is full of them, Plus the other day i saw some monster Silver Jackets at the wedding cakes but they would not touch anything.
Narrabeen Lakes is always a good bet for flatties.
I'd go after the school holidays on the flats around near the caravan park, or go early. You could also try wading around the flats at the sports academy end, not sure if the lake is affected by pelican itch at the moment though.
good luck.
From the Warringah Council website for those that are interested:
Pelican Itch is the common name given to a skin irritation caused by the marine parasite Bilharzia (Austrobilharzia terrigalensis). The parasite occurs from Fraser Island in Queensland to the Victorian border and is common in Narrabeen Lagoon in the summer months when the water temperature exceeds 24 degrees Celsius.
The parasite has a complex lifecycle and lives some of the time in the marine snail Batillaria australis. During the parasite's 'larval' stages, the larvae leave the snail and swim about looking for warm-blooded animals - generally birds such as seagulls, however, swimmers are not immune. If the parasite comes in contact with a human, it will burrow under the skin and eventually die, causing an itch. If not scratched and infected, the lesions normally recede and disappear after two to three weeks.
If you, or your family are affected by pelican itch, a doctor or chemist will be able to assist with management of the rash and pain relief. The existence of pelican itch in Narrabeen Lagoon is a natural phenomenon and opening the lagoon more frequently would not assist the situation.
Hehe Neil i got it from the Entrance once snorkelling around there, it sucks!
never had it myself but heard that it can cause a few sleepless nights...
