Hi guys
Just got back from Weipa and what a place it is.
The weather was brilliant and the fishing was good.
We did the house boat thing and can highly recommend Steve from Weipa Houseboats. He is a weath of knowledge and will help you organise most things to help with your adventure.
Our first day on the houseboat saw us heading 50km down the coast south of Weipa and we anchored at Pera Head. Our plan was to use the hired Polycrafts and tinnies to explore the Norman River. Unfortunately we didnt get into the river over the next couple of days due to the shallow entrance and winds that pushed into the beach.
We did enjoy catching the offshore species though.
Parksy caught a couple of longtails and a nice mackeral whilst the rest of us were happy catching coral trout, mackeral, queenies and the variety of reef fish that were hungry for lures.
That night we burlied up some massive sharks and had fun catching some of the smaller 3m bronzies.
The 3rd day saw us back inside Weipa Harbour and anchored at Hey Point.
This point was brilliant as it was central to both The Embely & Hey rivers.
The following days saw us catching queenies, barra, mangrove jack, fingermark bream, bream, barracoutta, trevally, threadfin salmon, king salmon, mud crabs an even an archer fish on a lure.
The last two days saw me miss 9 great fish but I suppose that alone will get me back next year. I lost big barra, huge threadfin salmon, massive queenies and gigantic sharks.
The sharks and crocs that are inside Weipa Harbour are massive so leave your swimmers at home.
All our fish were caught on lures except for the sharks.
If you can get away for a holiday I can whole heartedly recommend Weipa and Weipa Houseboats to make a special trip fo you.
We ended off our trip by fishing Evans Landing catching queenies and trevally from the wharf.
