camping 7 mile beach

Hi all I have just moved here from Cairns and missing the freedom of the outdoors and great fishing and camping. Am planning to go out and explre this weekend and do some beach fishing ( we dont have decent beaches in cairns) and am keen to find a spot where i can camp and fish near the beach. 7 mile looks good but not sure if you can camp there does any one have any ideas and tips for beach fishing, camping (where you can have a open fire and not be surounded by caravans) about 2 hours fron sydney? Also i remember catching prawns at night with a scoop net and a torch at merimbula as a kid . can you still do this any place in NSW?
