I have one of those you beaut Olympus MJU 770 digital cameras that you can use underwater down to 10 M.

I took it to Fiji early last year and took three photos swimming on the surface, the camera then malfunctioned and I could not take any more pics. In all, the camera had been used underwater to a max depth of 5 M no more than four times. Each time I followed the makers reccomendations for washing/drying the uinit after U/W use.

Took it back to the shop where I bought it, at this time it was a little over 12 months old. The shop charged me to inspect the unit and on return advised that to repair the camera would cost around $450.00 or nearly the price of a new one.

When I complained that the camera should not have broken down I was told that the warranty conditions (fine print) require the seals to be replaced every 12 months. The cost of that service is also quite prohibitive.

I then looked into the warranty terms and found that they only reccomend replacing the seals every 12 months. It is not mandatory!

Back to the dealer and through them to Olympus where after some heated exchanges (including threatening to take the issue to the Fair Trading tribunal) Olympus ended up replacing the electronic back of the unit for a nominal fee. ($50.00).

So, if you have an Olympus 770 camera be aware of the above scenario. Also that warranty terms may not be finite, I recently listened to an expert on the subject who claimed that all goods are subject to a Statutory Warranty which basically requires goods to perform to their intended purpose for a reasonable time. Worth noting!

I only use my unit above water now, which is a shame for I quite enjoyed swimming with it and taking some shots of fish.

Cheers

i have a 1030 sw and its fine, its over a year and i have replaced the seals 1 before because the seals break when they are under pressure, so be ware that 10m is only an approximation

I have just gotten the Olympus µTough 8000, I hope this won't be an issue. It takes great shots but I haven't used it underwater (yet). I think it's a newer model than what you guys have, though?

I'v used my 770 underwater diving and for surfing shots for 2 yrs now-no deeper than 10m, just reguarly check the seals and there should be no probs, sand and dust are the seals enemy you've just got to keep them clean.

Just adding my old minolta yellow half brick is still going great guns after over 15yrs of service, seals have been replaced twice. Its the model with the std or zoom lens selection and has been good for down to 15m.
