View Full Version : Long Reef/Collaroy Basin in a dingy

I'm after some advice on fishing Long Reef. On the map it looks it would be sheltered from the southernlies, around Collaroy Basin. Would it be ok on a calm day to venture out on a dingy? Also, is there free parking there at the end of Anzac Ave?
I'm thinking of targeting snapper, so any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

you can get out there on good days from the fishermans beach ramp, depending on the size of the "dingy" you were talking bout!!
It can be pretty protected but wouldnt want to take on any swell as it wraps round the reef pretty good at times.
besides much of the good snapper ground is out past longys protection anyway, so you may also wanna wait till the windy months are over.
Dec/January would be better for access, tho not really for snapper

Thanks Stef. I was thinking it might be a bit ambitious.
I'm just after something different from my normal routine within North Harbour.
I might stick to inshore and perhaps try around Fisher Bay at the Spit Bridge, at the weekend, weather permitting.
cheers

Putting a dinghy off the ramp is pretty easy...and there's plenty of fun to be had fighting kingies once out there...you don't have to go too far as well...I've been out there a few times in the last 2 months in a mate's dinghy (4.5mtr) with a 30 hp on the back and it's been fine...most king's have been just under the 60cm mark but fun still...

when I say "dingy", I mean Sevylor inflatable. Here's a link:

It's fine in sheltered waters, but if it's in any way rough or windy, I know not to go out. Perhaps as you say, not too far out might be ok if conditions were right. I guess there's better chance of catching big fish there than North Harbour. Would love to get on a kingy!
thanks sean
we'll wait till a calm day and give it a try but stay somewere near the edge just incase somthin rong happens

I went to your link. And if you inted to go reef fishing in that your either mad or brave! People Who fish reefs and bombies in small aluminium boats (the wash warriors:puke: ) are a select group of people who have taken years to hone their skills. Your engine needs to start first time EVERYTIME.
But hey dude good luck to you and if you do go out get some pics and post them up it would be awsome to see you landing kingies out of a little blow up!!:appl:
did u decide to go or not?
if you do please get pics:nutkick:

Instead of a Downrigger, wouldn't be easier on a 'yak to just drop down a bomb on a bit of cord? Be easy enough to haul in after the strike wouldn't it?
yeah true but like to wind it up and down quick to where the fish that a displayed on my sounder are, but that is a good idea
