Tom,

That outfit sounds fine however if you are throwing lures (which I assume you are) then you might want to consider using braid (6-14lb) instead of mono (any of the major brands Fireline, Spiderwire, Finns etc etc) and just run mono, or fluorocarbon as a leader. As you get into it you may also consider moving onto baitcasting gear to get a little more accurate with the casting:yahoo:

For a beginner Tom the threadline is the way to go. Braid will be ahelp though. 8lb fireline is about all you will need in the river.

hey tom
yea i would have to agree that the outfit you got is perfect for you seeing you are starting out , braid is the way to go mate as the other guys have said. as for lures well the best help i can give you there is try them all, but i would say look at the soft plastics i use the squidgy stealth prawn , wiggler, shad, but you will have to try different head sizes to get the result and also the squidgy spinner bait, alvin purple, golden eye and the sliver fox but as i said try them all even the hard body lures they work just as well and as for spots to fish there are plenty of spots along the nepean river and the lower hawkesbury once again try them all
good luck tom

thanks for that, i have tried to use a baitcaster before by memory it was a shimano callus and all that would happen is birds nests so i sold it for 35 bucks at a garage sale

I think baitcasters are essential for lures especially for bass ,I found that if you buy a cheap reel it will take twice as long to get use to as ,if you buy a middle to high range reel learning to cast gets easier ,find someone who has a baitcaster and get some pointers
good luck
