View Full Version : Tassie trout eats mouse
Been a while since my last post.
Went for a trout bash south of launceston before the season ended and pulled a couple of nice fish and while gutting one of the larger specimens i found 2 mice within its stomach. I was pretty astounded. Pics are attached
Been bream fishing on the east coast for my uni study also and have been landing some cracker fish over a kilo. will post pics later this week.

F*** Me how wicked is that. i dunno how a trout could even fit them in its mouth let alone swallow them. did the mice look fully grown??
Yeah man, was extremelly suprised. Male trout have huge mouths so no trouble in fitting it down its gob. As far as i know its fully grown. Been smashing some cracker bream down here at the moment, kilo plus's on the east coast
Mate hows the charter stuff going?

It's quite common to have trout eating mice over in NZ.
I think they wait for them to fall in the water around the edges of rivers/lakes.
Beats eating bugs and mud eyes.

I think people under rate how vicious a predator the trout really is. Just because they can gently sip flys from the waters surface doesnt mean they are not a brutal hunter that will devour anything that moves.
This is the reason they have been so very destructive to our native fish stocks.
I urge you guy's to read a book called frog call, it's one of my favourite books written by one of Australia's most prominent trout fly fisherman. He details how destructive these fish are whilst telling some of the most wonderful fishing, family, and friends experiences you'll ever read.
I've caught bream with full cicadas in them but a mouse let alone two is a wonderful find well done!

Cool. Lots more protein there than in a fly or nymph.
