Hey Everyone, New to the forums, i am seeking help & advice on fishing Botany Bay as i heard is a great spot to catch all sorted fish. I recently bought a 5m Boat and moving from fishing off wharfs onto the ocean.. far from i know i heard botany bay is good for king yellowfish, salmon, Jew fish, Banjo Shark etc. i have been going out with a couple friends so far and haven't had much luck as yet Ive tried the barrels, off the posts near there, near the rocks of the airport and had been catching undersized fishing. Ive even tried just fishing off the heads and had nothing but a stuck line on on the bottom of the ocean.. Our Currently setups are around 30lb lines and use about 1oz sinker that runs down to the swivel and a 1.5 tracer with suicide hooks all big long shanks, the bait we use are squids & pilchard when we fish from the local baitshop | | O 8 | | | J Thats how our setups look like if that makes more sense then my description early.. We usually start fishing around 5am and go fish off around midday but come home empty handed as we release all the baby snappers we catch.. the only thing we got lucky with are banjo sharks at the barrels which we released thats when we fished at 3am. All advice will be great on setups or baits or anything we are doing wrong or times we are going. I know it takes time to learn the fish your catching but you should be lucky to atleast catching something decent. thank you..
Gday Nub,
A newbie as well, i have been out on a friends' boat a few times too around Botany Bay. Some days have been great and other days its been trial and error. We had caught a few decent sized trevallies and a few kingies around the drums. Havent caught that many squids or live bait but all in good time. Do u have a fish finder as id say that would help alot? I found on the days that we did catch a decent amount, the weather was fine and it was mainly in the arvo when the tide was comin back in. Otherwise at a lower tide, i think it'd b better out towards the heads. Like anything, it takes a while to find out where the good spots r. Botany Bay has alot to offer and i would like to spend more time out there to explore it more. Yarra Bay/Molineux Pt/Break Wall is apparently good for squid and live bait and kurnell side on the right of the wharf is meant to be a great spot. Also along the airport runway. As for your set up, its pretty similar to what we have been using! The paternoster rig also seems to work well for me there.
Welcome to the site, try using less weight, very small sinkers and try soft plastics.

Turned the fish finder mode off on your fish finder.
What you look for is fishy looking spots. Holes, Bait Schools etc :smiile:
I might try the Bay tomorrow too, Or The Hacking. Not sure yet.
Best of luck. :smiile:

Cheers Mate, does turning the option off show bait schools etc and more detail on the finder ? Ill let you know how it goes.

Yeah. Fish Findering mode uses more detail towards that feature and sometimes the fish that show up on the sounder might not be a fish. Fish normally come up as a curve etc Its hard to explain.
Watch some youtube videos to get a better idea.

Those fish symbols are so annoying. I don't have a boat and I can read a sounder without those stupid symbols. Surely they're not necessary?

Not to mention the beep noise it makes whenever the fish symbol comes up on the screen.:rolling laughter:
I really need to get myself a new sounder on that note. Colour could be nice.

Hey Nub, were u the 3 blokes stuck just near the entrance of the runway? I was on orange the boat that tried to help u's(if it was u) before u guys strayed into the no go zone. We notified a couple of other boats heading out that u guys needed assistance out there. How'd u get back in the end? We felt bad we werent able to pull u out properly but the swells were a pain in the ass.

Hey Bud,
Yeah 3 blokes =) we didnt see no boats the boat was stuck in bad swirls all we were doing is concentrating to get out of there.. and trying to figure out what the guards were saying in the cars on the runway... the petrol tank sucked in and relised it was sucking air and not fuel so had to flip the tank and keep trying to punp petrol in but eventually we got it started and got out of there but was crazy never seen swirls that bad in the bay.. Thou ive serviced the engine and got a new fuel tank so we dont get in that problem again... unfortunally we have a radio but someone broke the atenna.
Im thinking of going out again soon but really want to give something new a go maybe trevally alley were we might be able to catch legal sized fish..

Why dont ya try another waterway mate ?
Nothing wrong with the bay. But theres def alot of other fishing spots.
Bottom Bashing Bate Bay will always produce Flatty and the odd Snapper.

Good to hear u made it back in some form or another anyway!
Botany bay has been real good most times ive been out there but also ive found it seems we catch the good sized fish around 3pm. Strange but true.
Theres a few good maps around from fish & tackle shops, etc about the bay so stick with it and im sure ull be rewarded in the end.
Im actually wondering if anyone went out on the bay today as when i drove past it it appeared to b a perfect day for it, unlike yesterday!

hi give this a go
anker up so your boat points toward something such as wharf ,rocks, bridge pilons
lightly burley
i mean just a trickle and if ankered right your burley will go to the wharf, rocks that you pointed you boat at
then use light line (around 3kg )and only enough lead to get your bait half way down the water (if its nice and still no weight is needed at all )
put the rod in a rod holder and leave the bail arm open
and watch what happens
happy fishing

Hey Fishinf,
Yeah given that ago used to Fish off the wharfs at drummoyne and anchor near the whalves and catch big bream and flathead. but we decided to do something new and catch bigger fish and target different species..
Yellowtails/Trevally and others etc
Hehee i guess i only trust the bay raised in the eastern suburbs dont know much about any other area, but now moved to the western suburbs its a mission to drive down was going to go yesterday but grown to fond to be lazy hehe

Nub,
I have one piece of advice for you and this will hold you in good stead for the rest of your fishing life.
Before you set out on a fishing trip you must know which species you want to catch and target that species ONLY. This will take a bit of reading and learning. I suggest you get an Australian fishing encyclopedia and study one species and perfect that method.
Too many people dangle bait in the water and are happy for anything to bite their hook, this is the difference between an angler and a dangler.
You will of course encounter other species whilst targeting your chosen species, though your rewards on your chosen species will be great, with huge bounties of fish and much bigger size. I just beg that once you perfect the art of catching one species you learn to catch another and don't be greedy and take too many fish.
Good luck in your fishing adventures.
