Hi everyone,

Enjoying soft plastics and would like to make my own jig heads. Have seen some for sale in the US but are only suitable for Eagle Claw Hooks, some don't specify hook type.

Can these molds be purchased here, if so are they any good and can they be used with leading hooks such as Mustad, Gamakatsu and Owner.

Thankyou.

Best place to look is a website called http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/ & search do-it moulds

They sell moulds, hooks, lure & rod making parts & pieces & very well priced & outstanding delivery etc the list goes on.

Buy overseas (nomaly i'd advise against this & tell you to shop local BUT in this particular case) unfortunately moulds out here are marked up rediculously, if you can find them at all.

The only thing you have to do "if" you want to use a heavier gauge hool is a tiny bit of carefull dremel/engraver work to fit the thicker shanks, not hard at all, easy as.

would suggest standard ball heads, will suit virtually any situation & nearly always fall true. bullett heads fall ok also but obviously nose down & faster. Other heads have a tendancy to wander a fair bit sometimes or spiral which in my book is no good at all.

It is a far cheaper to make your own heads than buying them & takes no time at all to make 200 or so.

Prices are in U.S dollars remember

Hey Greg,

Thanks for your excellent reply, just the info I was looking for. I didn't think of the engraving method(and I have one at home!)...simple effective solution. I seen a video of a 1/16 ground out to 1/32 ounce with a router piece. I'm surprised the jighead molds haven't caught on, the savings are substantial.

Thanks for your help

savings are massive, especially when you chew thru as many as I do.

pack of 50 Gamakatsu HW's are about $22-25 in shops here.
we normally buy in boxes of a thousand from offshore. Gamma's or Owners normally, cheaper 1's that are still "ok" would be Mutstad Aberdeens.

Bought the Jighead mold (round head) and hooks seven sizes (Mustad Aberdeen) from Netcraft, didnt see the Owner or Gamakatsu hooks. Ordered 100 of each hook as a starter. They are certainly cheaper, delivery due soon.

Jigheads have been made. They came up very well. The Do It Mold is very easy to work with and the jigheads can be made up very quick. :smiile:

I wont be needing jigheads for a while.

Whats the rough cost of a jig head mate, does it work out much cheaper than buying from the shop. Im usually using the squidgy range of round head like the ones you made.

I'm pretty sure for $120 we got the Mold and 7 packs of Mustad hooks. (100 in each)
We got Soft Lead $20 for 10kg and we didn't use all of it. So all up 700 Jigheads for $140 but this were with using Mustad hooks. It would cost a little more for owners. (Next time) I don't think the Squidgy Range is owner. Anyways once you have the mold you have it forever. So yeah it works out heeps cheaper.

when you go through about 500-1000 heads a year it works out ""alot"" cheaper

If you buy the "Do It Mold" make sure you oil the hinge (normal motor oil 20W is ok). The molds are great to work with.

Painted vs unpainted. That should be an interesting contest.
