View Full Version : How to kill a fish humanely
G'day guys, with summer on us and kingfish moving into the harbour I was wondering if anyone can till me what is the best way to kill a fish humanely. I know of a few different techniques in which to do this but what is best way or your way. I normally try and cut the main blood vessel in the gills and if all else falls hit them in the head with a cut down cricket stump until it stops moving. Also with the pelagics do you need to bleed them?
look forward to hearing your response
Cheers

A short hard blow to the head is a pretty quick way. As is a spike into the brain works very quickly. bleed them after the fish is despatched by cutting the gill artery, also break the neck to open up the veins in the backbone.
I have never worried about thumping them. If it's going home for dinner, then I just slash its throat, making sure to sever the main artery, and then break the neck back! Sounds vicious, but is very quick!
Then straight into an ice slurry!
thanks guys, one more question. Do you need to put a small cut in the tail in order ot bleed them?
No no no your all WRONG. There is one sure fire method that is quick, humane, and no violent acts are required.
Do this :
Soon as you get the fish on board just show it that pic of JOCOOL without a shirt on holding up a Jew.
THEY WILL DIE OF SHOCK INSTANTLY.

Good one Grant..
I've heard that a spike to the brain is the quickest way to despatch a fish, with a knife or you can get a specific tool. I think the Japanese use them for tuna. Then of course you would still have to bleed the fish. Not sure about the cut to the tail for kingies but have seen it done for Sharks. Something abou their liver maybe :?:
I cut off the head and tail of any small sharks I'm going to keep. Was told that this helps reduce the ammonia tang that sharks can get after death. Don't know if this is true or not as I've never not cut off their tails.

a mate of mine made me a spike to use. I've tried it a few times on flatties and the kingfish I caught but they still won't die. I aim for between the eyes but after the third go i've given up and just cut their throats. Maybe i should take up Biology again.

Grant - don't know whether it was the shirtless look or being thrust up against that armpit that would've killed it - both would be a cruel way to go

Blacky - if a fishes brain was between its eyes you would not be able to bridle rig them as live bait - dead bait maybe!
The kill spot on a flathead is further back towards the spinal chord and with most other fish located behind the forehead area - with a bit of practise you'll find it pretty easily.
This site will give you a bit of an idea http://floridafisheries.com/Fishes/anatomy.html

mate cut its throat, snap its neck thats the quickest way, then throw it in a ice slurry or if ya worried about killing the fish take a pic and let it go thats what we try to do unless we want fish for dinner
I read a while ago that MOST fish don't feel pain. I forgot where i read it, but try googling it, its pretty interesting^^.
If i remember, the figeting they make when they are out of the water or hooked are only due to reflexes not because theyre in pain.
