Some really interesting articles! I dont know how to feel about that marlin now but I know that as a teenager I would have had no problems killing a huge fish like that and hanging it up just for the glory. I hope this young fellow realises the many thousands of eggs that big old girl could have produced.
It's the 50yrs of fish stocks that really strikes home though. It's something that my fishing mates and myself have always talked about. Imagine if ALL types of fishing was banned (and eveyone obeyed the law) for two years. Would this be enough to kick start a small scale 'golden era' of fishing?? I think the effects would be extraordinary. Even though this would be imposssible to implement and will NEVER happen, I could hack two years to give the fish a break! I would just have to polish off the .22 and give the rabbits a hard time.
2 years of C an R doesnt sound that bad but i guess there would be alot of stink from fishing clubs that weigh in only dead fish

yeah bass flicker re the 50yrs of fish stocks it does make you wonder.
there is an article on the north sea cod fishery that collapsed one year with no indication that ill try to find which speaks volumes.
i think the biggest issue is just the scale of some of the worlds commercial fishing fleets and their $ motive.
with so much demand for fish and so much money to be made and no way of regulating the open seas i dunno what hope weve got.
there is a boat called the farley mowat that is trying to stop large scale fish piracy and whale hunting amongst other things
think the site is http://www.seashepherd.org or something
at least locally things are being tightened up on but there are arguments there too from interested parties.
makes you sad to think we may not be fishing some day soon, cos it will just be too hard to find fish.
Gotta say tho, i think the results of the banning of floating kingy traps speak for themselves, and other management techniques are working.
Of interest to me was the report that nsw fisheries commissioned on the economic cost of commercial striped marlin fishing
those with acrobat reader should check it out

In saying all that i eat a lot of fish and love it so i cant preach, i just try not to take more than i can use that day.

Thats a classic story!
making you feel safe 'arrow' or what????
haha
have you seen that photo of the kayaker in cape town being tailed by a massive shark?
dunno if its fake or not but its a wicked pic!
btw i have seen at least one shark every time ive gone fishing in sydney over the past month, usually harrassing us when were getting yakkas or just coming up the back of the boat to check out the berley trail.
Mostly makos or whalers around north head and quarrantine but also a hammer off clontarf.
:icon_smile_big:
mind you shark biscut man, they were tiny, only one was longer than 1m and that was about a 2m whaler off north head
:wiink:
haha ha great story arrow scared yet?
:beerchug:
Tom
:rolling laughter: :rolling laughter: yeah they dont worry me to much as i have been in the water with a lot of them but not mako, while spearing though with spearing at least you can see the comming :Death_To_Above: :jaws:
