Hey Arrow,
first a couple of questions...
what line are you using
Braid or mono - what strength...
how far were you from the marker?
did you berley??
etc etc more info please!
All of that aside, from what you said, one factor might be you werent deep enough....???
you can use quite a bit of lead to get down to the fish, cos they're often pretty close to the bottom, about 3 or so metres off.
On bright sunny days this is especially so, and if you use no berley they can be often reluctant to look up for food!!
a bit of motion on your squid is always good too - up and down or side to side will both work. You often get hook ups when your boat (or kayak) moves from a boat wake or similar, so your drifting past was a good move, but may have lifted the bait up too high as well if you had not much lead.
also you were on the less productive side of that marker.
try to get on the south east side of it about 10m or so away.....
your line may be too thick as well, dunno what you're using but the rats around quarrantine at present dont hit over 50- 60lb too readily.
i also have a question over using yellow braided lines, as the kings being a schooling fish and always looking for their mates are very attuned to seeing that colour.
Kings are also a curious fish to having teasers works well. things like a string of old cd's with a bit of lead at the end jigged up and down near your bait.
hope this helps... your squid presentation looks fine so doubt that would be an issue :wiink:

The bait and the rig look perfect.
A lot of it has to do with luck..especially finding the kings in the right mood.
gday mate yeah i use 10k platapus line (clear)and today that was my leader i think maybey i will go heaver lead to get down,i tried the set up where you tie a drop sinker on let it down then throw out my long leader so it gets sucked with the current and yeah i was on west side of the maker though tried it all sides, think i have a lead problem or down rig to set up,have you ever seen or is it commen to see a bloke sit there and wait for a school on the sounder then just start jigging?? anyway cheers for all your help mate i will stick with it ....if i had of had my spear gun i would have dived in a smashed one but ya cant spear there they were there just not for me....

try cubed pilcheds as berly throw out a few every few minutes hopefully this helps
Was the fella who got the 1st king using bait?> or was the 1st caught on a jig straight up?
If so it may have just been the mood they were in as we all know all fish are a bit fickled at times & it may just have been that it was more of a reaction bite to get them on the chew, any other day you may have got slammed & them snubbed.
Just one of those things.
Ps. berleying from a yak, personally I wouldnt do it:jaws:

Mate i have jigged kings off some of the sydney harbour markers several times. Sometimes when i know they're there i just rock up and jig, with 180 - 200g horizontally weighted metal jigs. Plastics will also do the trick, like weighted stick baits or even berkley 4inch minnows (pink clear white etc).
The benefit of jigging first is you will often find that the first fish to hit the jig is the biggest in the school - but they also hit jigs so hard and fast that you cant tease them out or lead them to deeper water, they just run straight for the marker and it becomes an expensive exercise. The other thing though of is that sometimes the rats seem to prefer strips rather than whole live squid or yakkas. Your 10kg mono should be fine though you may lose a few fish if you dont up your leader a bit. Also if the tide was coming in, using your drop sinker rig (which is a good idea) might have drifted the bait away from the marker instead of towards it.... you need really go no further than a running sinker rig.
Here are pics of some a mate and i got at the start of summer... two of which were jigged
gday mate, hey nice fish ,i think i might come in and see you on the weekend for a jig or two im going to set up a pump to keep my live bait water clean and full of air so those squid can ink all they want :smiile: and i will keep trying for them though i dont want to big of a kingy if there are boats around i might get towed into one :smiile: but in the open i wanna take on a big one but as soon as i finish painting this car and regoing it i will be chasing the jew fish along the beachs around north narrabeeen and some other good little spots http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/192/p1000495an3.th.jpg
