Watching Landline on the ABC the other day I missed the beginning of the show but the first segment was about beach hauling salmon in WA and the conflict between the rec fishers and netters at times. It turned out that the beach haulers were only getting 30 to 40 cents a kilo for their catch  . I think that in WA that they maybe thinking of making salmon recreational species only :D . Did any one else catch the show? Maybe you could fill me in if that is what is being considered.

Yeah Chris when I lived over there thats what they were getting. but think that they pull out some days at least 10 tonne, well you understand. Some of the pros that net the beaches actaully let you fish inside the netted area whilst they are tighening up the net. Some blokes are cool but most only really do it for beer money or farmers that are a bit hard up for cash.

I doubt the will actaully ever class salmon as a rec only fish in WA, but heres hoping. they get some 8kg+ salmon over there. very very big fish.

Cheers

30-40c per kilo. Do they use it for cat food?

That's insane!

It sounds to me like that story was a rerun as I recall seeing it at least 8 months ago. At that stage the reports were that this was the last time these beach haulers were permitted to do their netting. I couldn't get over it - they were using Toyotas to pull the nets loaded with salmon up the beach.

Oh and don`t forget, they`re happy to give the rect fisho fishing nearby a couple sambos. He didn`t have a hope in hell catching one himself as they netted around the school he was casting at. :?

Don`t know about you, but id rather catch one myself!
