I got a heap of bonnies and a king on a cheap $5 deep driver, with upgraded hooks of course, blue in colour, no more expensive lures for me, just can't put that much into fishing anymore, as long as they swim right and have a good action they'll catch fish just as good as any other brand.

Rapala CD's are all you will ever need.

As CnR said cds are good tho if you want a cheap
lure that will do the job in general for basic sydney
trolling i cant go past the trollcraft lures they cost
less then $10 each with the smaller sizes which are great
for bonito and salmon also kings cost around $7
and garanteed to swim in a straight line every time
or your money back.
Id be using these if your just starting very user friendly.
Most divers with metal bibs might swim off course then you
might need to bend the eyelet to make it swim straight
Cds are not to bad tho try stick to a lure with a set plastic bib
they will more then likely swim straight as most are factory tested.
Thats my 2c

cheers

ok cool il give em a go. whats better using a clip from leader to lure or just using a loop knot to attach.

I like using small snap swivels reduces twist if you pic up rubbish
last thing i want in my braid is twist.
If you were just casting piss the split ring off and tie a loop if you wish
either ways all good.

yeah i think i might use a snap swivel, did a bit of research n they seem to b beneficial. can u cast all the mentioned lures? with casting do i cast n let it sink or do i need to retrieve straight away it so it gets to the required depth?

Troll mostly.. but no reason why you cant cast them if the fish are busting up around you...not so great casting into a wind tho.
Majority will float so as you retrieve the bib will pull the lure under.
There are a few slow sinking divers on the market if you need to get deeper but i wouldnt bother in general sydney 20m depth bonnies will work
the first 5m from the surface when feeding same with salmon.

Hey mate, I'm not the most experienced troller / fisherman though I had a good day last week after my first ever trolling session (with only 1 lure out) which was a Rapala Cd-9 Yellow,Black and red. Although we mostly caught Bonito, its was fun all the same. Location , tide and speed are the factors among others (like water temp & dirty water, after rain etc) which you may not have got right. I wouldn't bother trolling if your not out by the heads, also I was advised to stay as close "as safely possible" to land. So i dropped out the lure after we passed Sow and Pigs following the shore line around Middle head then cut over to North head and so on.. at a slow pace 5-10 knots (didn't seem to matter the lure kept getting smashed!) - maybe the tinny couldn't go fast enough? it was 1 hour before high tide. It didn't take long (less then 2 mins) and we were on our first of many Bonito. Maybe that helps, could be that you were just unlucky and the fish weren't keen. variety of colours is allways good too, If one colour isn't working try something different! Oh and were you using a leader? like black magic or vanish etc?

All the best

yeh thanks TB IL keep that in mind 4 my next attempt. I was using a sardine cd n a bonito colored cd, the f18 was a pillie color. I may have over done the distance tho cause it seems a fair bit behind the boat, maybe 25m or more. imnotafish, yeah it was a bit tricky getting the speed for the lure, i just swam the lure next to the boat to get see what speed would be suitable for the action of the lure and stuck with that, is there an easy way to determine knots n distance from the boat? it was only a 5.5hp motor but wouldnt that be enough to get some speed? yeah i started from shark island to about what i think was sow n pigs reef (iphone google earth estimate :p) yeah i was using 10lb vanish as leader, i had 20 but thought it might be over kill.

Mate 20lb is no over kill also 20 to 25m is a good distance
with bonito if your lures in the water and not pulling out then
its ok..keep checking that your rod tip is vibrating that means
the lures swimming good if it stops you most likely will have caught some rubbish...weed etc.
4 to 5knots is ideal for them lures basically at a jogging pace or a fast walk.
If you download the navionics charts and gps on your iphone think its around $15 for the app...you will have full gps on your screen pretty much
will do everything a expensive gps will do, that will have a speed over land reading in knots i think ill check up for you and get back on that or maybe someone can comfirm??
Pm sent in reguards of places to try
all the best

I've found the GPS on my iPhone (using Navionics) is really slow and often inaccurate, taking its sweet time to give me a semi-decent reading of where I actually am.

I think a proper GPS would do a better job, but maybe there's just something wrong with my connection?

Lucky my iPhone is jailbroken, i'll download the cracked app of the Navico maps, if it's not good, i'll just delate it.

yeah i kept looking a the rod tip, the rod tip looked pretty good vibrating so i kept the same speed. yeah quintrex i have the jailbreak 2 but i think i might get rid of it cause it causing a few glitches on my phone n most good apps i d/l dont work and have something wrong with em. ehh dont think its worth the cost of the phone if something happens :p il get the gps n see how it is. thanks for the pm bud should help. oh also wats the best knot to use when attaching the braid to leader? i was using an albright knot.

Hi Alex ive put it to the test and was as accurate as a simrad radar overlay
gps as accurate as a furuno gps as accurate as a lowrance gps
think its your connection or other.
Went out a few times with a mates and it was spot on to a meter or 2
and sure enough the sounder comfirmed it was.
Why would you jail it cost sweet FA for the propper app.
