Apologies to those who have read this report on another forum. This is for you Haji. :icon_smile_wink:

Went out on Monday for a couple of hours and was confronted by wind and some big surges. Water was green and lots of kelp and weed floating around. Didn't get a single down in an hour, so decided to try again Tuesday.
Got an early start (for me) at 6am and the water was glassy and clear. Took my mate Bob, who has just started to fish for blackfish, and it was ideal for him to watch and practice. I checked that his float was weighted correctly and then turned around to get my rod. He was on to a good fish before I had baited up. It was just glorious on the rocks and with an hour to go until low, we were off to a good start. I hooked a couple of 34cm fish, which promptly went back, and then started getting some nice fish around 40cm. We fished for 3 hours with the tally being 9 fish for me and 2 for Bob. He is keen and I gave him a few more tips on how to read the water and what is happening to the bait and float. Also to be selective with the cabbage he baits up with. Tomorrow is a no go, as it will be a full house in National Park, but he is talking about Thursday, just before he flies out to Townsville

Bob, testing out his new gear.

Kept a few for dinner and released a few to fight again.

Hey KKW thanks for the post, some nice fish and great to eat too.

I reckon if I had the glasses out the day you went I might just have spotted you from my place. It is a hell of a long way for me to get around there via Audley so maybe I should get a canoe and paddle across in a tenth of the time.

Have you tried at the opposite shore at the end of the Esplanade pathway? I saw some guys fishing there last week, also saw some blackfish rolling under the ledges half way to that spot. let me know if you are going to go there and I will come and take some pics.

Cheers

Haji

Went for a walk along there yesterday, Haji. Swell was up a bit along the Esp. but couldn't see any feed for the fish towards the end (Salmon Haul). You will have to message me when you see them and I will come have a look. Left a message on your phone, but you may have been busy/snoozing. :) Parked across from your driveway when I went for a walk.

Well you what if fishing outside doesn't pick up i might just give these blackies a go, how do you rate them on the tooth ?

Just ask Bees, Danny. He doesn't have a clue, which is good :) They are very nice. Must prepare the fish properly though. First, they are kept alive in a keeper net until ready to clean. I cut their throats to let them bleed out, then gut them, take fillets, leaving the rib cage and belly flaps on the frame. I then skin them and all is ready. When at home, coat with plain flour, dip in egg wash, roll in multigrain bread crumbs, fry in butter. Just glorious. The ones I did on Tuesday, I cut into pieces, then dipped in Tempura batter and deep fried for 60 or so seconds. Served with steamed veggies and oven fried chips. Get your dad to drop you at my house one day and I will take you.
