Hi all,
Brighton RSL had its monthly Botany Bay fishing comp. on Sunday morning with a turnout of 42 anglers. (12 noon weigh in)
I wasn't lucky enough to get a spot on one of the club boats, so it was landbased bashing for me again.
Given the minimal wind, I hit one of the breakwaters along Grand Parade early and had an ok Day.
Given it was comp day i decided to bait fish as well (as SP), and lucky i did as the bait did most the catching (Pink Nippers/Hawks Prawn).
Sorry to say most catches were throwbacks of Snapper/Bream/Whiting, but I did manage to land a good Bream and Tailor.
The exiting part was when i caught a Yakka.....and thought....Yeah....I might just live bait this sucker!
So I re-rigged and put him out there.
After about five minutes the rod went "BANG, BANG". I grabbed it, set the hook, then listened to the scream of the reel! This thing was big.
Fought it for about 20 minutes, during which it had three good runs of about 60m or so against strong drag. On the third run he busted me off. I was using 12lb line.
I think it was a big King, or maybe Jew, but the fight was different from when i got my last Jew, admittedly that one was only 60cm
Anyway....I was very dissapointed after dropping it. It would have won the comp for sure.:ranting2:
Turned out most anglers had an inconsistant day with many throwbacks.
The winner was a good bag (2.5kg) of Flathead. I came 5th for my Bream/Tailor Combo:smiile: . Best single fish was a 700g Leatherjacket. All fish cleaned, gutted and gilled prior to weigh in.
Sorry - No photos this time.
