Hey guys
I am planning on going to the Hawkesbury tomorrow, and was wondering if i could have some tips on Jewies ?
I have circle hooks, are they okay for Jewies ? 6lb leader inside ?
What are some good spots to try and what tides ?
I have about 20 live poddy mullet i caught down the Georges River yesterday, good bait ? what else should i take ?
Never got a jewie before :1yikes:
Thanks
6 lb leader are you trying to bait us or the Jewies :)
I've never caught a Jew but a few soapies at the rail bridge, people like that area a lot. It's popular.

Hey quinnie, i'll be out tomorrow, launch at bayview, and may go up the river, stay in pittwater, or just go bounce outside at the reefs, like east , west etc.
I rekon if your chasing jews, go at least 20lb, with maybe a 30lb leader. and fish lives, or your mullet can be slabbed, or butterflied.
i never got one either, but never really chased em..
i'll try to look for one f kamils good posts with a google map of the bridges etc.

Circles are fine, just make sure you fish them properly, i.e. leave plenty of hook exposed and let them eat the bait. Up the leader to 20lb, no point running any big risks - although I have seen plenty of big Jews caught on light leaders. We fish anywhere down to 8lb leader and have landed some nice fish up to about 80cm on it.

i will probs be in a brown fishing shirt, and my misses wears a bright orange/salmon coloured fishing shirt.. so should be easy to spot.
if you take your trap out, at around 7ish you should be able to go to careel bay, stay to the left of the bay, and go rght down the end to the left of the mangroves, (pretty much right across from the wharf on the other side of the bay) and get a bunch of live mullet too... have a flick for some whiting and long toms while your there :)

Thanks mate, i've got 20 Poddys now so i'll try for some yakkas somewhere :)
Will keep an eye out for your boat
I will be launching at Brooklyn boat ramp around 7am
Hope you catch some mate :)
Daniel just stick to the shore line, anchor in close and fish drop offs and change of tides especially the first few hours of the run out. Use 30lb leader max and 4/0 octapus hooks, with fillets of fish, there are so many pickers like eels and catfish so it is annoying but you should do ok. Look through some of my posts especially the ones in the hawkesbury that have the maps of where to catch them. Use a size 3 or 4 snapper lead on a dropper hanging off your main line. trace tied to your main line off about 1m. Rod tips as horizontal to the water and be quiet. Let them bite and bite until you see a bigger bite then strike. You have to standing above your rod all the time once they bite, you may have half a second to strike and then its over. Yakka fillets work well, squid better and butterflied baits are tops with two hooks in them like on the jewfish secrets video. All the best. PM me if you want other info or just ask in the mods forum.

what did you end up with quinnie?
we went to the closer reef of palmy for some trevors, and a bunch of pickers (hooked a few mado so i think there was a mass school of them)
then went to valiant on the way back in (closer to the joey) and hooked 5 kings, landed 1 (undersize) and 4 busted us up. One on my 50lb outfit with 15kg of drag on him... still got me onto the wreck...
But all in all a good day out.
:ohhh yeah::ohhh yeah::ohhh yeah:

I'm no expert, but from what I understand tailor are a top jew bait when butterflied.
If I were going to the Hawkesbury for jews around now I'd be going to the local fish market and picking up a couple of nice big fresh whole Hawkesbury mullet (and/or squid as an alternative) to send down. Mark at Narrabeen Bait and Tackle usually has them, but I'd call to ask first, and it's on the way to Bayview boat ramp if you're coming from the south. The mullet school up at this time of year and leave the estuaries, makes for rich pickings for the sharks, jews and commercial fishos, not sure if they have moved out of the Hawkesbury yet, but they were still schooled up in Middle Harbour on Sunday arvo...better luck on your next outing.

Sure dude,
well we are heading back out on sunday again... Me and another mate, (missus wants a few weeks off)
probably head to the bait grounds at west head, then straight to valiants, then try the east and west reefs.
let me know if you're going out too :)
i am keen to get me that kingy that smoked me :)
