View Full Version : Gulp Sandworms????
Guys I posted this in another post but did'nt get much of a responce so I can only guess that it was'nt seen or no one knows the answer :Beating_A_Dead_Hors , anyway, here it is again in its own thread.
How do you rig your Gulp sand worms. I have looked at them a few times when I have been buying plastics and wondered how you would rig them.
They just seem so long. I was wondering do the fish grab one end and miss the hooks alot or do they seem to smash the whole thing down no worry's?
Anybody got a picture they could post?
Thanks.
A lot of people cut them in two then rig them with a very light jig, threaded on at one end. Others use them whole. Still others use several to chase jews.
You will get a lot of takes that don't hookup. You have to fish them very slow, or just on the drift and let the fish have plenty of time to get it down. My best sessions have involved drifting with the tide in the upper sections of Cowan Ck and letting whiting and flathead hook themselves.
I've had limited success with bream - casting to shoreline and working it back.
I usually use a 1/48 or 1/40oz jig with them

You can rig a half a sandworm on any jighead, dependent on the depth you are fishing, if you get too many short takes add a stinger hook in the bottom half of the lure, fish them slow, they are a bait more than a lure after all. alternativley fish them unweighted whole really slow.
You should just experiment and find out what works for you.:beerchug:
They are a deadly lure for bream on thier day, fish them lightly weighted 1/40th-1/16th oz heads cut roughly in half.
Mostly they are fished slow however they can be quite good ripped quickly & the fish will hit them on the drop.(say a good crisp rod length lift & retrieve the slack line as the lure falls back & settles again) pay attention to your line as it drops & make sure there is no change in its usual fall rate, if it seems to stop early or tweek lift the rod & check for weight & set the hook simply by lifting more firmly.
i just got a pack of the camo ones yesterday:yahoo: i cant wait to use them!:1fishing1:

heres a rig out of a fishing world mag.
jig head - 1/50th oz to 1/40th oz in No.2 to No.4
2nd hook - No.8 to No.10 bait holder
Part A - tying the rig
1. using a uni knot or similar, tie a leader to the ribbed part of the lead keeper.
2. cut the leader about 6cm below the knot attached to the lead keeper.
3. tie the baitholder hook to the end of the leader.
4. tie the rig on to your main line via the eyelet on the jig head.
Part b - rigging the SP
1. thread the SP worm on the the jig head and push over the lead keeper (do not bunch the worm up on the hook).
2. insert the baitholder hook into the worm just below the jighead and pull the hook through the worm so that the attached line is also pulled through the plastic. repeat this serveral times. hook the bait hold through the lower part of the worm and leave exposed. this should leave the line and hooks hidden quiet well with in the worm.
fishing with this rig.
1. cast onto sand flat or shaded area near bank and let line go slack till the worm hits the bottom (watch for strikes on drop).
2. let the worm rest on bottom for 10-20 seconds then jerk the rod tip straight up about 10-20 cm but make sure it goes start up and not back then let the worm drop again leave for 10-20 seconds and repeat.
hopefully this should help some catch some fish im going to try it as soon as i get some worms.
The above rig works well with whiting n bream in shallow water and especially on clear, sandy flats........They often get snapped up by lil flatty's tho which can be a pain but well worth the whiting fillets......
Top post mate.....Spot on.....:ohhh yeah::ohhh yeah::ohhh yeah:
They also go alright under boats, jettys etc.. with using a 1-2grm jig head and a size#1-1/0 hook.....Breambo's will smash the head region on the drop and whilst on the bottom.....Twitch out slowly as bites will come up to 2 mins after the lure has settled....I like to shake and twitch the worm for round 2-3 mins under structure.....

finally got round to getting some worms today, after playing around with a few different rigging techinques and casting into my pool to see how they swim. i think one of the best ways is the same as i posted about but instead of putting the hook and line through several times run the worm over the hook and on the line so that the line runs inside the worm and have the hook come out somewhere near the bottom, this keeps the worm straighter and it swims better.
Ive seen Jews caught on them too. They look really goood. Not that im into fishing with Plastics.

Just be careful no-ID....don't want your leader bitten off.

yer i know theres a good chance of it getting bitten off but it does give you that second hook down the bottom so hopefully it can hold up
