Hey, my fisrt post here and i guess its a good one :smiile:
Went fishing early yesterday morning off the rocks and was floating in hope for the usual (salmon, tailor and kingies). Started slow only catching a small school size tailor and a few small yellow tail and also a sweep.
Heading towards high tide i decided to try some of the smaller pilchards i had and float closer towards the wash and ended catching a very nice bream (pictured below)! Im confident there were more smaller bream around with my pilchards regularly being pulled slowly under and comming up with guts missing. The bream pictured weighed in at 1.4kg and was 43cm long.

Went out again today in some really challenging conditions and got lucky hooking this bream (pictured below) through the eye :noway:... I put in a decent cast off a spot that usually only provides salmon and tailor and could see my float slowly being pulled under. At this point i was curious and as a large wave came crashing on top of my float i thought that i would come up empty handed. To my dis-belief the bream got hooked through the eye and after a short run came straight towards the line. The bream weighed 1kg and was 37cm long.
The bream was one of only two fish landed for the day. Other was a small 33cm snapper caught at another spot that was way too dangerous to hang around...

Went for a fish yesterday and ended up getting a couple more nice bream. The big one was 42cm and i estimate around 1.1 - 1.2kg :)
Umm i caught them using pilchards on 3/0's ganged.. When i ran out of pilchards i decided to use some kunji (no idea how to spell that) and got some very decent bites straight away. I only had a little piece of the kunji that i got at low tide and wasnt sure how it would go, seems like it could be the go for bream? might try smaller hook and kunji next time.

nice fish
where abouts did you catch them ?
It has to be said, but, try letting those bigger ones go, they are the big breeders and are important, in addition, are very old. A bream grows rapidly in the first 3 years but after that, they take a very, very long time to get that size. The same goes with any species...try to avoid keeping the larger fish.
cheers.
p.s... nice catch though.

there is nothing more that ****s me then people trying to tell other fishos what they can keep and what they cant keep...........
there is more bream in the river/ocean then humans on earth...
who are you d king to say he cant keep a 42cm bream....
i say good on ya mate for a catching a few good fish and i hope you enjoyed eatin them.
to d king are you saying you would prefer to see someone keep 10 small fish then to keep 2 good size fish...you idiot those small fish will grow one day and become breeders to...mate i would prefer to keep a 80 cm flattie then catch 10, 45cm flatties...let the smaller fish grow and live and keep a bigger fish i say....
thats my 2 bobs worth.....dont fire me up with stupid coments on someone catching a few good size bream
:Drinkin: wayneo
Quote me where I said he couldn't keep it...I advised him it is better to let it go
With your words I can already tell your one of those pathetic fisho's that stock their freezer full for the sake of it then throw the fish out because they have been in there too long, going to waste.
Stupid comments? your reply is the only stupid comment I see.
I know bream are plentiful... they would disappear quite quickly if every angler kept every big fish they caught, thank god people SOME have enough sense to c&r.
I would rather keep 10 45cm flatties then one 80cm. why? two reasons....
1) Smaller ones taste alot better
2) Every flathead over 60cm is a female, and to every one of these females there is on average 60 smaller flathead with her. This fish would be the main breeder producing millions of eggs. You will be making much more of a dint in that particular school if you took that one female the 10 other smaller ones.
Try learning a bit more about the species you catch, it will improve your fishing, idiot. :pottytrain1:

Its a free world when it comes to keeping a 43cm bream or not but the facts support the case for releasing one large fish and keeping a larger number of smaller fish if you want to preserve fish stocks. Hard to do but it is a matter of education - Natural selection dictates that the big fish are the survivors and it is good to get their good genetic material passed on to future generations. In a fishery in Canada I believe they showed that the average size of a type of fish was decreasing because the larger fish were being caught and the smaller fish that bred earlier were becoming more dominant.
I dont know what I would do if I caught a 43cm bream but it would be nice to think that I had the facts at my disposal when I made the decision. I think with fish like bream especially it is an issue because the big fish are pretty old and it would take a while to replace them.
Anyway its not cut and dried but attitudes are changing and it is great that we can have this debate. It would be good if the reputation of amateur fishers could improve as we show greater care for the environment that provides so much fun to so many.
Getting off soap box now

Wayneo, i think a right hand big red mustard hook, would do the job!
Fella's,
This is a very old topic of confrontation & you both have more than valid arguements on it, so for either of you to comment that the other is an idiot would be idiotic in itself, you both just have to agree to disagree on this one, as it's a never ending topic that gets quite steamy as it's already heading in that direction:duel: (seen it all before) as I'm sure you both have.
These forums are to spread the joy of the capture & help those who wish to learn the how too's of of a SPORT (thats what I feel about it) we obviously all care for whether it be for food or sport, it's just FISHING ffs.
I fish tournaments & relaese all fish I catch in these, because thats the rules, but went out on saturday & got 7 kings, kept three & released the rest, for the same reasons that you have both stated, I kept 3 to eat fresh & give mum some fresh fillets as well, & released the rest for the preservation factor of my chosen sport.
No one should ever ridicule another unless they deserve it ( & believe me I'd be one of the first to slam someone for blatent glutteny) so move on & fish for what ever reasons the sport appeals to you!
As for Tournaments that promote catch & kill , thats an arguement I'd be glad to get into with you, because of the sheer waste I have seen with my own eyes.:banghead:
Guys, its not about what fish one catches, one persons Mullet is another mans Marlin! It is an age old debate, while alot of people think only big fish are breeders, most people dont know smaller ones carry roe also, for example not only big Snappers lay eggs, there are many 1kg and 2kg fish that breed and produce millions of eggs. While i used to think a big Flathead was a great catch, and have kept maybe one or two, in the years passed, i have learnt that in all honesty they taste like crap, they are dry and tasteless once they get over 3kg. I have the same with Bream, but not so as much as it depends on where they were caught. While no one is right or wrong whether you can keep these fish, most fisherman have begun to release the bigger fish in species like flathead and bream for the above reasons, but in saying this, you cant tell someone not to keep it if they chose to!
Just keep it cool guys. A good discussion is a healthy one. No name calling and other things!

in all honesty....i couldnt care if you kept 2 flatties over 70cms,if you wanna take it home and cook it,thats fine with me....
i clean my fish at the tables and see people cleaning the smallest of fish which are under sized...that pisses me off big time...and i tell you all i ark up at them to and say, mate they are to small......so why would a fisho bag a bloke for keeping a 43cm bream....i say good on him.....we dont know how many times he has gone fushing and came home with no fish, so why do some people have to question his catch???
thats what my problem is
how many times do you read in forums that evry ones says that the elusive big jew didnt come out to play???but you see the same blokes cleaning 5 or 6 soapies at about 50cms....thast a friggin joke
im getting fired up so i better leave it there
:Drinkin: wayneo
Good points there Wayne about about some poeple that do go out and come home fishless trip after trip, like i said, no one can tell someone they are wrong, it is their choice, whether its Flathead or Marlin or whatever. Thats great about you arking up at people for taking undersize fish, although a call to fisheries hotline may not go astray also as they maybe in the area, just maybe?! I hate people that take undersize fish. But thats another topic!
Kamil
someone has a short fuse....anger management a possibility?
you are taking it way out of context. First off I advised him that it is better to let them go I didn't bag him, want me to say that one more time?
For those fisho's who go without fish session after session, I say, TOO BAD, not doing your research or your doing something wrong so rearrange your approach.

dk1ng
you must be best fisherman on this site...so can you please post some of your expertise advice on how to be such a good fisho......
maybe some pitures so we can applaude your talent
have you ever caught a fish???if so share some with us mate
:beerchug: wayneo
To become a great fisho, simply look outside the square. Do not do what this bloke does and rock up and hope for the best.
Study your fish, learn about them and the water your fishing. Take a diary and jot down these things. It will make you more successful.
I have caught plenty of fish, I do not like to brag like this ----- nor will I give him the satisfaction of showing my fish.
remember 10% of fisho's catch 90% of the fish. Hott
EDIT- Wayneo & d k1ng, like I & others have already said, you both have valid arguements, no need to bait & react to each other! we all know your feelings, so by all means move on & continue posting more interesting stuff, like you both normally do.

Hi everyone :)
Just like to say I appreciate everyones input and that i have learnt a few things which is really good caz I am addicted to fishing and im trying to learn as much as possible!
Umm i dont regret keeping that bream, it was the first big fish i had caught off the rocks in like 5 months at that location. It tasted very nice and aswell.
Having said that though, there is a chance that next time I might decide to take a quick pic and send the fish back home... Ill tell ya what though, its hard letting go once youve got it in your hands, hehe.
Cheers for the support and hopefully I post up a thread on a big kingy soon, ive been trying so hard to land a big one (got very unlucky last week when I got it on the rocks and then the trace snapped right above the hooks.).
Ben R
p.s. I havent taken offence to anything people have said, sometimes its a good thing when people are upfront :headbang: also this discussion have become rather informative !
That's awesome bloke.
Honestly your a good person to see past it and see that there was no offence in my words. Good on you for catching that monster fish and I understand why you kept it, it is a plausible reason. I hope you continue to catch plenty of big fella's mate.
Cheers.

Ya sure did put the cat among the pigeons. I thought the whole thing was quite funny! Good on ya mate!Keep posting the pics of the big ones!:rolling laughter:
P.S No more Fighting please! Its not what its all about!
its my understanding that most rock/ocean/beach bream ar not resident fish but travell up/down the coast on annual spawning runs..probably why ya had to wait 5mths???But ya should have a pattern now so next year.....i agree keep a feed but theres no 2 ways about it big fish should be released especially if there resident or in spawn condition......think about it lads....what sort of farmer/fisho/hunter kills his broodstock?????Oh yeah there is one exception....beach haulers targeting mullet......which our fisheries office fully endorses knowing full well they only want the roe and the rest is fertilizer/pet food.....
