Hi guys , I live out near Penrith and would like to know if there are any spots worth trying out my way ? Are there any fish above the Penrith weir ? What is the closest area I can catch Bass ? Do I need to go downstream of the weir for some good fishing ?
Living out west means a decent drive to any decent spots , so having a spot out our way to drop a casual line would be great .
I read about a guy catching bass under the railway bridge at Penrith , would this be right ? I see lots of discussion about bass atm so can I assume this is the right time of year for them ? What else can be caught in there ?

Any help would be great .

As far As I know you can catch bass all the way up to Waragamba dam! Im sure Ive head the bass guru John Bethune talk about fishing just below the dam! Just go down to the river and throw some lures in under the trees at dusk or dawn at this time of year and you should hook up! The general hot bass time is oct to late march up that part of the river! you can also catch Filthy big carp and mullet around penrith also!

Thanks for that, what lure do you prefer ? I see lots of mention of spinnerbaits , would you use them first ?

No.1 for bass in the hawkesbury / Nepean would be a gold bettle spin with a slider paddle tail grub. There are hundreds of different lures that will catch bass, but the humble bettle spin (I prefer a no2 or 3 gold blade with a 1/12 oz jig and a sour grape grub) reigns supreme. % blades cost 5.95 , a pack of 5 quality jigheads $5-$8, pack of sliders about $11, this gives you enough lures to catch bass for at least 1 season.
I caught 100's of bass this way last year and I always had one rod rigged with one,
\Good Luck

I agree this is a wonderfully economic way to kit yourself up with agood amount of lures even if they are all the same pattern! The only prob Ive had is a poor hook up rate with these lures! I feel the hit and not the hook up! I think the fish are hitting the blade more than they are hitting the slider grub! Go and see the boys at the Australian Bass Angler Or Windsor Bait and Tackle. The later is my local Ben is always keen to put green anglers on the right track. But dont just scab info, buy something (even if you dont need it) support those that support the scene!!!:smiile:

Thanks for that guys , my local store is Tackle World at St Marys , so I will drop by there and see what they have . I agree with your comment on supporting the shops rather than just scabbing info . Hopefully I will let you know how I go some time Saturday . Can I still get them during daylight hours ? Or better during twilight ?

Yep Dave at St Mary's will be able to sort you out with them, and while you are there ask him what he caught his biggest EP on (I gave him a bettle spin that day and it really did produce!!!)Hott

At the moment, the nepean is really weedy ( last time I went ) and if you don't have a boat it will really make it hard, try further downstream. Dave from st Mary's sold me my first jitterbug....best surface lure for bass imho. He has caught some absolute monsters, he is the man for the area.

Yeah we went last weekend and it was starting to clear up , the weekend before was very heavy on weed . We might try again this weekend.
