Hey Guys,

I moved over to NZ from Sydney a few years back and I tell you, I have never seen fishing as good as it is over here.

The fishing is superb all over the country with huge fish in huge numbers. Here are some pics and links to video clips I have created while fishing here over the last 6 months.

The kingfish are HUGE here, my PB is 35kg, if you get a chance to come here for a fish, take it.

Remember when selecting video clips, right click and save target as to your computer.

Hey Guys,

The clips are standard windows media player, WMV files so you shouldn't have any probs viewing them. However I recommend that you don't just click on them as they will try and download and play the clip real time.

You are better off right clicking and selecting, "Save Target As" to save a copy of the file to your PC.

Some of the clips are large and will take a while to download, but believe me, if you like action video of catching large fish, its well worth the download.

Enjoy,

DaCosmo

Some amazing fish there !!!! Look at the size of theose Kings !!!

Did you catch those on charters or on your own boat, and how far out from shore do you need to go?

Hey Tom, What problems are you having with the movies? Broadband is recommended.

Hey 445F, A couple of the pics are from a charter over here based at a place called Whakatane. There is a active volcanic Island 51kms from the mainland called White Island and another group of rocks 3ks north of White called the Volkner Rocks which has a huge resident population of kings. The waters out there can be quite rough most of the time, but I did manage take my own boat out there over xmas and got amoungst them.

You can catch kings over here on a variety of baits and lures. The most popular lures these days are vertical jigs and the Japanese 'Zest' brand seems to work the best. If the kings are working at the surface you can get them with a popper or spinner.

Live baits, like kahawai (Australian Salmon), Jack Mackeral work the best for large kings and can be rigged either just below the surface with a balloon or sent down below with a large sinker.

Another popular place to fish for huge kings is the ranfurly banks which is off the east cape of the North Island.

I live in Auckland and fish the Hauraki Gulf which is also abundant with snapper, kingfish, trevally and Kahawai.

Snapper over 10kg is regularly caught in the gulf and kingfish average 15kg and up.

Here are a few pics of the places I just talked about.

Cheers

Hey Mate, If you ever plan to come over here for a holiday, I would be happy to take you out to get a 20kg kingie.

Geez, thanks DaCasmo, very kind of you to offer !!!! I might take you up on the offer one of these days !!!!

I downloaded some of the videos (they take a bit of time to download, even with broadband, perhaps that is why people are having trouble downloading - as some of them are huge in size). Good action happening. Are you the camera man or the bloke in the red cap?

Finally, what are the large kings like to eat? eg the 15kg one you brought up?

Some of the guys in Sydney say the ones over a metre are not that nice to eat as the meat is a little grey.... I would have thought that if the 15kg ones are good to eat, then the 1 metre ones should not be a problem, after all they are exactly the same fish aren't they?? Just that they are the XOS versions over there???

Hey 445F, I have the Navman cap on in some of the pics, the guy with the red cap is my fishing buddy, Bill. We both have 7m aluminium fishing boats and we alternate between his and mine most weekends.

Here are a couple of short video clips of our boats.

They build great boats over here too.

As far as the taste of kings go, we either cook em up as steaks or smoke them. As long as you blead them right away they tast great, even the 2m jobbies.

Hey DaCosmo,

Very nice boat indeed, great camera work too. What sort of boat is it?

I love the area in which you were boating, very beautiful and scenic. Much better then the concrete jungle we have here in Sydney...

Can't complain though, the harbour is awesome for a big city like Sydney, it is relatively clean and minimal travel time to get onto nice sized Kings.

Hey 445F, my boat is a SothernSportz 670 Hardtop made in the South Island of NZ http://www.southernboats.co.nz

My mate Bill, has a McLay 680 http://www.mclayboats.co.nz

There are quite a few manufacturers over here, another popular brand is surtees, http://www.surtees.co.nz

The scenery here is awesome, a lot of islands etc.

Hopefully see you over here soon.

Hey Jewman70, I am glad you enjoyed all the vids. I am packing tonight for a trip back down to white island this weekend. Its a 4.5 hour drive with the boat in tow, but well worth the effort when you get onto those XOS kings. I'll post up some pics and more vids when we get back.

Those Kings are MASSIVE !!!! The first one is so fat too !!!!

Could the holes in the fish have been a result of gaff marks!?

Hope you go onto some big Kings DaCosmo, let us know how you go.

Hey Guys,

Well the plan was to head down to Whakatane on friday night for an early saturday morning trip out to white island but I had to work late friday night and didn't get back home til midnight so decided to fish in the Hauraki Gulf close to my house on saturday and head to coro where I have had some good success with kings lately.

Well what a beautiful day it was, but we couldn't find the kings. Unfortunately they were not around but we did land some nice fish.

http://www.3rotor.com/images/fishing/volkner2/lance-poureye1.jpg

http://www.3rotor.com/images/fishing/volkner2/lance-poureye2.jpg

This is a huge "pooreye" that would have gone close to 8kg.

We also got our share of small fish, like this very small mini-snapper.

http://www.3rotor.com/images/fishing/volkner2/lance-snapper2.jpg

http://www.3rotor.com/images/fishing/volkner2/lance-snapper3.jpg

This snapper was landed on a 10/0 hook which was funny.

to be continued....

....from previous post......

It was such a nice day that I decided to come back in early and head down to Whakatane for sunday. After coming back in, washing the boat and packing our stuff we didn't leave until 10pm, so it was 2.30am sunday by the time we got there. We decided to fuel up the boat, get some ice and catch a few z's parked up at the boat ramp car park.

At 5.30am Sunday, we launched and headed over the bar, unfortuneatly 2m swells prevented us heading out to White Is and Volkner so we hung close to shore with about 5 nice ocean going Kahawai being landed on light tackle. Calling it a day, we decided to check into a motel and see what the weather was going to be like on monday and lucky for us it was perfect and we headed out to white is and volkner. The 51km trip took just over 45mins and we were greeted with a dead calm sea.

After 30mins of jigging, I landed this nice fat 25kg brute.

http://www.3rotor.com/images/fishing/volkner2/lance-king1.jpg

He put up an awesome fight and was a great fish on a jig. Now thats what I am talking about.

Gotta love this place

Cheers
