Default TASMANIA

Hey all,
Just returned back from Tassie, what a beutiful place! I was staying on my girlfriends dads (250 acres) property in a little valley called Lorrina. Being in such a remote little valley allowed us to see some amazing wildlife. We saw tonnes of Bennets Wallabys, Paddy Mellons (literally hundreds), Brush tail possums, echidnas, platypus, a tassie devil, qualls (native cat), bettongs, and plenty of beautiful birds.

I went fishing in the great lakes trying fly, sp's and the old faithful celta. Was not overly impressed with lake fishing. It seems to be a method that needs more refining than I can do in two short weeks.

I did however venture into the Mersey river and sight casted my shiny little celta at a tonne of small rainbows. It's a beautiful way to fish and my knowledge of small river fishing paid off. I landed about 10 rainbows, none of which where very big. I couldn't even crack the 30cm mark. I was not dissapointed how ever because watching these beautiful little fish chase and strike your lure is amazing.

We must however remeber that trout are an invasive and introduced species which eat our native species and have played part to the extinction of MANY small native species of fish, Im very dissapointed to see a closed season on these none natives when not enough is done to protect our natives.

Sounds like a top spot you were staying at mate.

I like tassie myself. I was planning a trip down there later on this year to have a go at the trout myself :)

Nice report :)

Oh farkin tell me about it Greg, I saw some pictures of those big Black Horses in the pubs and tackle shops! They are insane, as a fellow breamer I was well aware of them before I went down but wasn't really salt based where we were most of the time. I will however be down there again and will be taking my boat.

Default Heading down there

I will be heading down to St Marys in the Fingal Valley on the east coast from 13th - 20th of March.
I hope the fish get a little bigger than 30cm but will probably not fish lakes, just in the streams and rivers so my chances may not be increased.
I will post a report when I get back.

Thanks for the heads up Bass

If your heading to st marys your probably better off trying your hand in the salt the flathead fishing is supposed to be pretty good down that way.
